Project 333:  The Minimalist Wardrobe Challenge has me pretty motivated

Over the past two years, I have been striving toward minimalism.  Every time there is a reduction in “stuff” my brain just feels better.  It makes me feel so much less overwhelmed only saving things I love or enjoy, plus gives me more time and space for other enjoyable things.

While I’m a fan of minimalism, it is a struggle with how to get there because I just have way too many things and have a hard time deciding what to hold onto or get rid of.  So, I appreciate specific instructions and a challenge.

The past few months, I’ve been tidying up with the Japanese Konmari decluttering method as much as I can, but recently decided to take minimalism to the next level with Project 333 by not only keeping items that bring me joy, but also limiting my wardrobe to only 33 items.

Three months with only 33 items

Project 333 is the minimalist fashion challenge that invites you to dress with 33 items or less for 3 months.

Here’s the jist:  All clothing, accessories, jewelry, outerwear and shoes count towards your number. Exceptions include wedding ring, underwear, sleep wear, in-home lounge wear, and workout clothing. Clothing that no longer fits or becomes in poor condition may be replaced during the time period. Box up the remainder, seal it with tape and put it out of sight.

Supporters claim that no one will notice that you are only wearing 33 items, but that you are likely to receive more compliments because it will be only your favorites and you’ll carry a lighter energy.

I’ve spent the past week sorting.  Here is what my closet with 33 items looks like today.

  My actual dates will be November 1-February 1st.  I’m not starting till November because I will be travelling in October to a warmer climate and will need seasonal clothes.

Other than my vacation clothes, I packed up other items that I did like but didn’t make the cut for 33 items and put them away. The idea is, if you don’t end up needing them for three months, then you can donate them.

Wow!  It is amazingly bare, simple and to my surprise exciting.  I feel lighter already and I imagine having less clothes will result in much less laundry to clean.

Before I started preparing for this experiment, opening the closet always stressed me out.  It was stuffed full of clothes and miscellaneous items that I had no other place to put but wanted out of sight.

After this clean out I keep the door open I enjoy looking at it. If all goes well, after the three months I may add a vanity to the closet which would make it a really cool and more useful room.

It isn’t designed for you to suffer.

It’s important to keep in mind the project isn’t designed for suffering, but to lighten your load and free your space, time, and mind.  The goal is to create a simplified wardrobe that you can live, work and play in for three months.  If clothes don’t fit or are in poor condition, replace them. But, it is suggested to use the one item in and two items out rule as to not start accumulating.

  1. I think I’ll give this a go! It might actually come easier to me than I think as i don’t wear 60% of the clothes in my closet as it. I think it’s great to have “signature pieces” that you become known for by family and friends.
