GOAT YOGA

I know, I was thinking the same thing.  Goat yoga, what in the world?!  But, for real goat yoga is an unusual, hilarious way to reduce stress, get some exercise, and have laughs.  It’s a great mother-daughter, girls day out, or date night activity!

Goat Yoga

Curiosity was killing me so I had to check out goat yoga.  And, besides I was looking for something crazy to do for some mother-daughter bonding.

I apologize for the darkness of the pictures, but it’s because the room was perfectly dimmed.  Lit by Christmas lights inside a barn setting a for  totally cool vibe.

This post is part of a series I am writing called Cultivating Relationships.

Part 1:  Cultivating Relationships  – Connecting with your Teen

In completing my life balance wheel  , one area of focus is on my relationships with the people I care the most about.

My goal is to cultivate them by being intentional , present, and mindful .

Each month I pick an important relationship to cultivate somehow.  This month was my 15 year-old daughter, JaimeeLynne. Fifteen can be a tough age and a time with parents are just not cool anymore.  They have friends, sports, homework — and often a lot of drama going on.

You know the time period when you ask how their day was and all you get is “Good.” Well, I want a little more than that.

So, when I knew our schedules were clear I time blocked a few hours to spend some one-on-one time with her.  I wasn’t quite sure what that would be but wanted to do something different and crazy — spend some time with her, make some memories, and let her know I can still be spontaneous and fun!

GOAT YOGA

Goat Yoga

Goat yoga perked my curiosity because it just sounds so bizarre.  She agreed to it and boy was it fun!

WHAT IS GOAT YOGA?

Goat Yoga is about disconnecting with day to day stress, sickness or depression and focusing on positive and happy vibes.

It is literally practicing yoga while having tiny goats climb on you, sometimes snuggle up to you. It was developed by Lainey Morse, a photographer in Oregon who began hosting goat yoga events in 2016 while coping with a divorce and health issues.

Hilltop Views Farms located in Williamston, Michigan is one of eight satellite locations of the Original Goat Yoga and where we attended.  It is family owned and operated.

The setting was a big barn lined with Christmas lights and cozy warm space heaters.  They served warm cider and water. (Although some events even include wine!)

It wasn’t a traditional yoga, but it was a lighthearted, stress-reducing, unusual experience that created laughter, memories, and great stories to share.

The session lasted about an hour and half and it’s just so unique and unexpected to have goats climbing on you that it takes you to a place of presence and mindfulness in the moment. You kind of forget about anything going on in the world, which is pretty nice.  The goats force you to remember not to take every little thing so seriously.

There is a happy hour where the goats go nuts climbing on and under you all at the same time.  For an extra bonus, we even got to feed a baby goat — something city girls don’t get a chance to do!

WHERE CAN I DO GOAT YOGA?

AND NOW FOR THE NUMBER 1 QUESTION:  WHERE DO THEY POOP?

They do sporadically and unexpectedly make some pebble-sized deposits where-ever and whenever they want, but the staff cleans it up and sanitizes immediately without skipping a beat.  The goats are just so cute, adorable and the vibe so calm and happy, that it really isn’t a bother.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF LAUGHTER

I think most people can recognize that laughter is good for you.  But, it also stimulates many organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain. It’s good for your mental health and relieves your stress response.

BENEFITS OF YOGA

Yoga has many health benefits in itself according to osteopathic.org.

Many of these benefits include:

  • Increased flexibility.
  • Increased muscle strength and tone.
  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality.
  • Maintaining a balanced metabolism.
  • Weight reduction.
  • Cardio and circulatory health.
  • Improved athletic performance.

NOW COMBINE THE TWO, AND YOU’VE GOT YOURSELF A MOOD-ENHANCING, STRESS-REDUCING JACKPOT

Doing goat yoga with my teen daughter was a fun, stress reducing experience that we could share together, giving us a memory to last a life -time.

FUN FACTS ABOUT GOATS WE LEARNED AT HILLTOP FARMS

  • Baby goats are called “kids”
  • Goats are pregnant approximately 5 months.  They usually have 1-2 per litter but can have more.
  • Both male and female goats have beards.
  • The pupil of a goats eye is rectangular.
  • Goats have four stomachs!  (Apparently cows, sheep, giraffes and deer do to)

What a fun, unique experience.  I’m so glad I got to do it with my teen.  It was something unique that we will always remember.

But, seriously who thinks up these things and what’s next? JaimeeLynne is hoping it has something to do with puppies.

  1. Apart from the regular Yoga, Mindfulness is the energy that helps us recognize the conditions of happiness that are already present in our lives. We don’t have to wait ten years to experience this happiness. It is present in every moment of our daily life.
